OpenBikeSensor Pro - Freiwililige Tester gesucht

Dear @gluap,

Good afternoon, my name is KuanYeh Chou, and I am currently working in Frankfurt as a mobility consultant in Frankfurt, I completed a PhD at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where my research focused on cycling safety and behavior using large-scale GPS and simulator data with a modeling approach.

I plan to return to academia to research cycling safety, especially on near-crash events and perceived safety in bicycle streets in Frankfurt and collaborate with Professor Knese. I have drafted and attached the link of research proposal that focuses on:

Exploring Cyclist Objective and Perceived Safety in Urban Interventions: A Naturalistic, Sensor-Based Evaluation of German Bicycle Streets, Case Study of the City of Frankfurt am Main.

As I remember, you have OpenBikeSensors and OpenBikeDashcam that can detect vehicle close-pass, I have several questions regarding the sensor availability and data collection for bicycle near-crash incidents in Frankfurt:

  1. What is the maximum number of OBS sensors and OpenBikeDashcam available for conducting the study in city of Frankfurt? Also, is it possible to borrow OBS in nearby cities in Hessen state such as Mainz or Offenbach?
I plan to recruit around 50 participants with different cycling experience, who will ride on specific bicycle streets (Fahrradstraße) and on streets in an identical environment but not marked as bicycle streets for around 1-2 weeks to explore cycling objectives and perceived safety.

  2. What types of data does OBS record?
As far as I know, vehicle passing distance, speed, and number of overtakings can be recorded.
What other features can OBS detect? Is it also possible to equip the dashcamera (not restrict to OpenBikeDashcam) to record the video of cyclists riding behavior and incidents occurs at surrounding?

  3. Is there another device that can record cycling near-crashes or events where cyclists feel unsafe?

I currently think of the wristband heart rate for measuring cyclists’ perceived safety and stress levels. Also, I found that Berlin has a SimRa project (SimRa – Sicherheit im Radverkehr) that a smartphone app can record GPS route data, and acceleration sensors in app can detect hazardous situations like sudden braking, swerving, or even a fall. Therefore, if we use both OBS and SimRa, we can have a more holistic understanding of cyclist safety.
Besides, if there is any sensor that can detect the tailgating, which might happen in bicycle street? If not I think adjusting the OBS sensor to detect tailgating might also be possible?

Thank you, and if possible, we can have a meeting discussing the sensors availability and study feasibility recently, once you are available. I am free to have an online or physical meeting.

Looking forward to your response, and hope to talk soon

Have a nice weekend.
